The second series of CBBC's crazy science stunt show 'Xperi-MENTAL' hit screens in the spring.
An enormous warehouse at Pinewood Studios was the scene of things being blown up, burnt, destroyed, dissolved in acid etc. The audience of kids use electronic multiple choice voting to predict the outcome of stupendous stunts that took place live before their eyes.
The ELP rigging and structures crew led by Andy Stacey had fun setting up and witnessing stunts such as 'car conkers' - two cars, each hanging from a crane, are smashed together to discover which lasts the longest. Kitchen appliances fall from a great height into a giant vat of water. Which sinks first? A car is shot from a cannon into a house. How far will it penetrate?
ELP working under the direction of LD Tom Kinane supplied lighting, rigging and structural design services. An assortment of Arri Fresnels, Arrilite 600 pulsars, 5K Bambino Fresnels, Par Cans and Floor Cans were in operation but most noteworthy were the 2 x 20 metre circular truss structures rigged by the ELP crew which dominated the studio space.
"This isn't the usual kind of hardware you associate with children's TV" comments Production manager Tony Slee. "I did a double take when the spec came through!"
